alt.binaries.multimedia.vintage-film Classic film prior to 1960
Comments:
First proposed in alt.config Dec 15th, 1999, final proposal Dec
23rd, 1999. Completely positive response to topic and Newsgroup name.
It is Vintage-Film SINGULAR, no "s," as this is about film as a
Genre or Art-form, not films plural, which describes the celluloid or
nitrate strips or rolls of film themselves, and thus is not the topic
of this forum.
I forget who it was who said something like "A Movie is just a
movie, but a Film is Art." The fact is that a Soundie or clip or old
TV program is not a movie, but it IS film. There is no a.b.film
hierarchy, and a.b.movies, poorly represented in sub-heirarchies
anyway, does not properly describe the type of material that would be
on topic.
Justification:
Soundies of the 1940s, 1920s Vitpahones, and
personality clips ARE being posted regularly to a.b.s.78rpm-era,
classic cartoons by Iwerks and Fleischer ARE being posted to
alt.binaries.multimedia, and films such as Casablanca and Reefer
Madness are being posted to a.b.multimedia and alt.binaries.movies.
10-day retention shows some 3000 headers in
alt.binaries.sounds.78rpm-era and 10,000 headers in
alt.binaries.sounds.radio.oldtime. This is an expression of the
interest in Media files from the era that will be covered in the
vintage-film binary forum.
There is NO Binary forum for the posting of classic films and
shorts, despite the increasing interest in the preservation and
restoration of early films, and the current almost cult interest in
classic features and Bad Movies.
I feel that this newsgroup is in fact overdue, and would focus
existing binary posts into a new forum where they may be easily found
by those seeking such material. This should not be considered a new
newsgroup that will substantially increase the number of binaries that
Usenet administrators must host on their server. Crossposts from the
general multimedia and Movie groups would be acceptable where
appropriate.
I would feel privileged if the news administrators would consider
this request. Thank You.
Charter:
This would be a forum for anything to do with film prior to 1960 or
that could be conceived to be of a "Vintage" or "Classic" nature. The
posts could be of Soundies, film clips, old TV programs of comedy,
music, etc,and documentaries ABOUT the vintage-film era such as the
"Hollywood" series or "Unknown Chaplin." Complete Classic features
would be on-topic as would be early cartoons and experimental Cinema.
Photographs and relevant sound clips would be acceptable as long as
they are to do with the topic of old film.
OFF-TOPIC MATERIAL would be Rock videos, anything from more recent
TV, any feature film later than the early sixties, modern cartoons,
etc, Also unwelcome would be porn (unless it's REALLY old, like the
Twenties) and modern documentaries about a
specific event of the age.
ORIGINATING FORMATS
The source material can be anything at hand, 16mm film, 35mm film,
video, records, CD's, newspapers, trade magazines, photographs,
Laserdisks, DVDs, what have you. The poster would be encouraged to
use good sources and would be assisted in encoding to best advantage
POSTING FORMATS
In a word, anything.. This is a Multimedia Newsgroup, the
downloader is expected to have a Multimedia-capable computer, and a
good connection to the Internet to get these often large files. Files
may be split into archives with Rar, the use of other filesplitting
programs would be strongly discouraged. The poster should provide
files that are compatible with both Macs and PC's.
